After watching "Bubba Golf" during the HSBC. It is clear that the eagle out of the sand trap was one of the best scrambles for a needed score in quite some time. Got me thinking what the best "miraculous Par save" you ever had??

Two par saves on the same hole come to mind. They happened about 18 months apart on #4 at Crooked Creek. The hole is only 125 yards but the green is shaped like a kidney bean. The right side is easy but a left pin placement is tough. Bunker in front, severe drop off in back, and a ridge in the middle of the green. The pics show where my tee shots landed. With each I got back on the green and 1 putted.

It wasn't a par but quite a few years ago I played a course in Virginia called Goose Creek. I hit a pretty good drive, it bounced a bit right on the fairway and then caromed of something dead right into and through the trees down the hill onto the edge of the adjacent hole. I couldn't even see the green and there was this decorative gazebo thing between me and where the green ought to be. I had the two guys i was playing with stand on the green and call out to me like I was Stevie Wonder playing at night... I took a big whack with a 9 iron and the guys on the green went nuts, got up there to find a ball mark 4 inches from the hole and sunk a birdie from about a foot away! I've been missing fairways ever since hoping to do it again...

I've holed out for par many times in my life, surprisingly, not nearly as many times for birdie. I wonder why that is?

My second to last 9 this year on the second hole, par 3, I blew an 8 iron about a mile right of the green which then hit a mound and kicked further right. I had a perfect lie, and I mean perfect for the short sided flop shot and I flat out chunked it. Little chilli-dipper. Didn't get it halfway to the green. I had a mediocre lie at best in the deep rough. Opened it up like a bunker shot and caught it perfect. Two bounces, couple feet of roll and it went in! My wife was very impressed. Two bad ones and one good one is still a par!

Since Lee mentioned his birdie chip in, I have to mention the National Get Together at Ravens Claw. Playing with Greg and Dirk, and hole #5 was a birdie that I pitched in from 40 yards out. High fives all around.

I see you forgot my 3W, 9I chunk, and SW chip in from 50 yards at Wyncote.

And the 165 yard "Magic" 8I that sailed the green on the following hole...

Who could forget that! I got to see some good golf from you, but then they separated us and your game went to hell. Note to Don... Always keep the dynamic Duo together!

My best save for par was at White Clay Creek last month. I played with JoeDon and his buddy. The 4th hole was about 190 with the pin all the way in the back. I topped a 4 iron that didn't even make the ladies tees. I then hit 9 iron from the rough at about 130 yards to the very front of the green. Studied the putt and hit a slightly right to left breaker of 74 feet dead in the middle of the cup. This game's easy!

Ironically, could not convert the miraculous Par save there.

I'm remembering a Par save I had at Jack Frost. Pulled the driver to the left and lost it in the junk and had a lost ball. Dropped from about 200 out and hit a 6 iron on the screws and it landed above the hole on the green about 12-15 feet away. Made the downhill putt for Par. Easy Peasy. One of the rare occasions that playing with Don worked out OK for me!! That was a nice course.

Few years ago hit a tee shot in a hazard on a Par 3. Had to drop 80 yards away underneath a group of trees. Hit a punch 8 iron that rolled about 70 of those 80 yards, went in the hole for the par.

I pulled a Sergio.. hit tee shot in tree roots of a dog leg left par 4. I closed eyes and swung hard with a hooded 9 iron and came up 5 feet left of pen. Sank the putt. No injuries.

I may have had better shots to save a par but one stands out because of the situation. Playing a club championship in 2012, I went to 18 a shot down to my playing partner for the 1st flight title. He teed off the 290 par 4 first and put it in the fairway bunker. I then hit a 4 iron down the left side. I had kicked OB and had to go back to re tee. He wanted to hit his shot while I went back and I said OK. He came up short in the green side bunker but had a pretty easy shot to save par. So I pulled driver and flew it to 20'. He had only 7-8' but was on the high side. I drained mine and he 3 putted for a double. I play team matches with him nearly every week and he tells me every time he just didn't want my par to go to waste.
