Academy here in Aggieland is selling Pentas for $28.66 a box (with the tax).

Why?

I have no idea, but Pentas for under $30 a box seems ridiculous. Aren't they as good as any ball out there?

More than likely they are trying to clear inventory for a new release of an updated Penta and call it Penta Tour, or something like that. They did the same thing with the Burner LDP and Burner TP LDP. Now the new Burners are Burner and Burner Tour. Same thing just new packaging.

Callaway no longer manufactures the HX Hot, replaced it with HX Hot Plus. No longer makes the HX Hot Bite, replaced with HX Bite. Both the HX Hot Plus and HX Bite have now been replaced with HX Diablo and HX Diablo Tour. Again, same thing just new packaging.

Just looked on USGA's list of conforming balls as of June 1, 2011. I
http://www.usga.org/Conforming..

It's showing 2 different Penta's. One with 360 dimples, the other with 322. The visual difference is that one will have the stamp "Penta/TP", the other is "Penta TP". Can't tell when each was released but I think that would probably justify what I had said earlier that there apparently is a updated model being released or just released.

These slight changes in the sidestamp are what determines the model year for the ball. For instance Titleist releases a new Pro V1/V1X ball every 2 years. Check out our website here to see the slight differences in model years http://www.mcssl.com/store/drm..

Hey, a little self promotion can't hurt anyone ;)

I'm sure you're right. But what doesn't add up is that other than Ripnrob's "horrible" review, I've heard only good things about the Penta, and the price reduction is much more drastic than Titleist's last year model (usually $39.99 down from $45.99). I'm assuming nobody is buying them is what's causing this.

Nike did this last year with the One Tour and One Tour D, both good balls but for my money not as good as ProV1s. I figured the sellers knocked down the price because nobody was buying them.

I don't agree with ripnrob's review either. I can see non-Titleist companies dropping their prices father than Titleist does simply becuase they don't have the market share that Titleist has. I think Taylor Made has a great product with the Penta. On the other hand I think that Nike had a total flop on their hands with the Nike One Tour and Tour D. thus a big drop in price. Nike seems to go through golf ball models as fast as Taylor Made goes through drivers and irons.

Total flop is probably harsh, but you're right: the One Tour and One Tour D are definitely a rung below the ProV1, ProV1x and Bridgestone 330 series.

The One Tour is fine except it's about a club shorter than the ProV1 and strong winds beat it up pretty badly. Fifteen years ago, the One Tour might've been the best ball in golf, but the ProV1 has changed the standard.

I'm going to be disappointed if the Penta can't hold its head into a strong wind because it feels much closer to my all-time favorite ball (Titleist Professional 90) than the ProV1.

They are trying to clear inventory so that they can put the new balls on the shelf.

I've been happy with the Penta and even happier when the price started dropping. I'm not enough of a "player" to know much difference between 366 dimples and 322, but I can sure tell the difference between $40/doz and $25 per dozen.
Dicks had a two dozen for like $39 special last time I bought. May have to go stock up on a couple of dozen before the new one comes out on the shelves.

The fewer dimples is suppose to improve spin because they grab more air and more dimples is suppose to make them more resistant to the air for more distance.

I just bought some Penta's a few weeks back. I like them alot, I actually picked up a little distance using them over the Bridgestone 330s and the Nike Tour. The feel is very good along with the control for me anyway and I'm a 2 handicap. The reason they are so cheap, they have had them on specials the last 4 weeks, buy 2 dozen, get the 3rd dozen free. Its just a promo that Taylor Made is doing right now. What some pro shops are doing I heard is not offering the buy 2 get 1 free, instead they lowered their price down to the upper $20- range and just not telling buyers about the promo--works out the same in the end~

FWIW, as someone who owns a company that sells all brands and models of golf balls, I can tell you that Pro V1/V1X outsells ANY other model by quite a big margin.

Let's just look at PREMIUM balls (your typically $45-$50/dz. retail). Now we don't sell NEW balls, just mint condition used ones. In the last 3 months we've sold over 3100 dozen Pro V1's. The next closest model would be the entire Bridgestone B330 line at 760 dozen. Next, would be all Callaway Tour i line balls at 540 dozen, ALL Nike One premium line balls are 240 dozen. Followed by the entire Srizon Z Star line up at 235 dozen. Taylor Made Pentas are at 180 dozen.

So as you can see, Titleist has quite a stranglehold on the competition. Year's ago I would have thought that where Tiger went (Titleist to Nike) the crowd would follow him. Apparently, golfers know a great product when they play it and that's why Titleist still reigns supreme over all others.

I too have noticed the price drop with the Pentas and would agree that Taylormade is most likely making way for a new ball much the same way as Titleist and Callaway and Bridgestone and Nike, etc., etc. do.

I've always thought of golf balls in much the same way as ice cream (or vegetables) in that some people love Pink Bubblegum (or broccoli) while others simply can't stand it! It's all a matter of taste but in the golfers case a matter of style and skill sets. There's a reason they make so many different kinds of golf balls...to fit the many different types of swings! The Pro V1 isn't the best ball for everyone. If it was, then why does Titleist make the Pro V1x and the NXT and the NXT Tour?

If I were a touring pro (I'm not) then I might worry about making sure I had the latest and greatest ball available. But to me getting last years model at half price is a great way to get quality balls on the cheap. Since it all really comes down to putting I doubt if having this years model would have made much difference on whether I made that 6 footer or not!

NIce price and seems to be a good ball. I found one when I was playing last friday and decided to try it as it was as new (no scarring). I drove it as well if not better than the Srixon I was using. So comparing top to top I like it just wished I could get in a nice yellow. :-)

Most of the pros dont play the new ProV1s any ways. Just about everyone that I have seen said that the use the 2008 or 2009 models.

I love Penta's. To me they are just as good as a Prov1x. I get about the same distance off the tee with them and about the same spin control around greens with them as well. In the proshop here the Pro V's are cheaper by about 5 bucks over the Penta's. Of course I'm not a teaching pro or anything, so what would I know?

I have been playing Penta golf balls for a while now. I have played Titleist Prov's, NXT, NXT Tour, Taylormade TP Red, and Penta.

The Penta is by far the best! Prov 1x is pretty close. I don't like the prov 1s as much. The Penta (and TP RED) are longer than either the NXT or the Prov 1s. I still get great spin around the greens (Prov 1s do have more spin), but I actually like the control I have with the Penta better than with the Prov 1s. I can launch the Penta much better than I could the Prov 1.

Take advantage of the good pricing. There is nothing wrong with the Penta ball. It is great!
