Golf is a game in which etiquette is a central theme, yet many of us have lost our temper with other people on the golf course and have had, at best, a heated exchange, and at worst...?. I always feel like an idiot after these and vow never to let my temper get the best of me again. This brings to mind something someone posted recently, which is you don't know who your're going off on out there. So let's here some stories. It's like driving, right? It's always the other person's fault.

Actually, playing with someone else keeps me calm. Especially if it's just a random pairing and not someone I know. Only two clubs I've ever broken in anger were when I was playing by myself.

I've had friends get pretty mad at me, though. I was playing with a friend who's 7-8 strokes worse than me on any given day, and he hit into a slightly soggy bunker with a steep front face that he didn't think he could get out of. I'm not in any danger of qualifying for the US Open in the next few years, but tried to offer a little helpful advice after the first time he failed to get out. He proceeded to tell me that I didn't understand, and that it is physically impossible to get enough elevation out of the damp sand in that bunker to clear the lip. I can't remember exactly the scinetific argument he gave, but that was the gist of it. After getting out on his third try, he threw his club violently towards the cart about 30 yards away, and proceeded to make the putt for a double. Which isn't really that bad of a result, all things considered... We both played much worse holes that day!

"Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned." -- Siddhartha Buddha

I don't often find cause to become angry on the golf course. Puzzled, amused, annoyed sometimes, but I find anger to be a fruitless pursuit. I have witnessed a few quite spectacular displays from time to time however.

I have sometimes allowed myself to become angered while driving. It may have been the other individual's uncaring actions which provoked me, but I take responsibility for choosing the path of anger. That's my fault, and I try to correct my error as soon as possible.

It's a struggle for me all the time. Shameful, I know, but I don't get to play very much and the problem lies in my inability to lower my standard to equal the amount of practice I get. So, yeah I can get pretty angry at myself. Like somebody said above though, playing with other people generally is enough to keep the outbursts away.

The only time I've ever gotten into a tense situation with someone I played with was 3 years ago at my home track. We were on the 3rd green, and it was one of those times when the guy next to putt would be putting on a line where it would help me see the line with my putt. So I stand about 30 feet behind him so I can get a sense what my putt is going to do by seeing his putt. As he's about ready to putt, he steps back and says, "You really gonna stand right there as I putt?" "I'm reading my putt dude." "How about you go read your putt somewhere else?" I could have escalated things since I had that 13 year old temper going, but I really didn't want to make this a scene so I backed off. We "resolved" things on the next tee and shook hands about it, but deep down inside I was happy he wasn't happy with how he was playing the rest of the round.

Why did that bother him? Where did he want you to stand?

Good questions. I mean I was standing around 30 feet behind him. Wasn't like I was 5 feet behind him. He wanted me to be at his back I think which is where I moved.

all of these stories are okay.... i have a great one.

We were at Stone Water Country Club in Ohio and were playing a 4 some.

3 people who knew each other (including me) and 1 guy who got paired up with us.

I had to ride with the random guy on the cart....

We were playing fine all day untill we got jammed up at 13. My one buddy who i'm not going to mention but we'll call him "Jack" started to get pissed.

he was mad he was playing terrible already but when we came to a halt on 13 his temper went threw the roof. "F*** This" "F*** that".

we roll up to the 13th green to putt and the random guy i got stuck with asked Jack if his ball was on the green. "...Did you make the green"

Jack Freaks out (walking up to the green with his putter) "WTF do you think is in my hands? WHATS THIS LOOK LIKE TO YOU. ITS A F***ING PUTTER!!!" he does the traditional putter throw at the golfcart i was on from 35 yrd away and the putter hit the bar of the roof and snapped the shaft. Jack runs over to the cart (where the random guy was sitting at the time) and starts swinging punches at him. i jump on the cart (because my bag was on it) and we drove off to the next hole.

Unfortunately i had to leave my buddies bec i was riding with the random pairing and he's like your friend is an A$$ hole. i was like yea i know he took it way too far....

We stop at 14 and pull out the driver (standing on the tee box) we see Jack come flying around the corner like a bat out of hell and he slams his cart into the back of our cart.

he jumps out and starts chasing the guy arround the 2 carts trying to rip his head off. we hoped back on and started to drive away before jack grabbs on to the cart rack and starts running at the same speed of those fast electric carts swinging his fist at the driver (the random guy) untill he fell off and we drove into the club house.

Mind you we're at a country club and we had to skip 14-18 after paying $85 to play. I was pissed. he's my firend...but damn!

the guy reported him and they came out and held him at the course till the police got there.

i left before that and went home...

Jack still hits me up to play stone water again and i tell him i'm busy hahah now this is a real story..... swear to god.

I got one.. I was playing in the Nature Valley Amateur in Houston last year. I was teamed with this kid which his family was following him. He had about a 10 person entourage. Well, the first 3 holes he is choking bad.. double bogey, bogey, double bogey.. I felt sorry for him. So, I'm talking to him. .helping him along.. trying to encourage him.. So, on the back nine he starts playing better, his confidence builds, etc. and on 17 I'm off the gren in a bunker talking to myself.. with the wind blowing I know he can't hear me. I hit my shot. I'm coming up the bunker waiting for him to hit his putt. His misses. He then looks at me and says "Dude, who are you talking too?" "You keep mumbling over there." "Quit talking." Ok.. first off, no way you can hear me 40 yards away.. secondly, now you are bitching about it IF you even heard me.. thirdly, I wasn't saying while other people are hitting.. Maybe I'm just too nice.. I tried to help this kid out initially and now you're gonna crap on me because you are playing better??? Really??

I guess we pick and choose in life who we call friends. Pretty classless. Sounds like the guy needs to seek some help at the local psychiatrist.

The one and only thing that will send me into nuts land is for someone to hit into me. It's the only time the F words go flying. I have gone back to the tee box to tell someone to their face, I have hit balls back to them, I just go out of my mind. If I'm slow I will let you by me. Hit into me I will slow down even more. If I waiting on people ahead of shit is going to hit the fan
