Does it bug anyone else that in the TV commercials for the new Titleist Velocity, the ball is spinning forwards, i.e. it has topspin? It should be looping precipitously down towards the ground, not hurtling forwards in level flight. I'll let the corona of flames go as artistic licence, but the breaking of the laws of physics is unforgivable!

Maybe they are trying to say that the Velocity makes you top the ball. ;-)

This really bugs you, doesn't it?

I think the forward roll is to counteract a ball flight that balloons too high, lol

good to know i'm not the only one! i can't imagine they didn't have someone on staff that knew the difference... or if they did, that they wouldn't think the more geeky science contingent of golfers would be alright with this oversight. bahhh!

It doesn't matter if it has topspin. It uses cold fusion for propulsion.

So seriously, most TV commercials are made by a creative team of 20 somethings that don't know much about life and most of what they learned about advertising is wrong.

For years I've done this during the Super Bowl. You know how many of us get together with a bunch of friends to watch the Big Game. Well the commercials get a lot of play. 10-15 seconds after a commercial airs, I'll ask "Okay, who can tell me who the advertiser was for the last ad and what was the product or service they were advertising?" More than 70% of the time each year NO ONE in the room can correctly answer EITHER ONE of those questions.

Ohmm, I just got the idea to see about this ball. I've been playing the Callaway Hex Black lately as my favorite ball. So far I kinda like it, the Velocity that is. It's not noticeably hard, to me anyway, at least not enough to be harsh.

I played well with it at Roanoke CC last week but that's not enough to buy me for good. I got two boxes in today from Golf Galaxy. I'll play them exclusively until they make their way to the shag bag.

One thing I "think" I noticed was that it really negated the harsh side spin on a crappy drive. I was OK with it off the irons and wedges.....soooo I'll post later, and would like to hear from anyone else who has actually played the ball.

Yep, the sleeve went quite well actually. I need more drives to really know about the distance, but the accuracy was very noticeable. I think this hits as long as the Hex Black that I'm playing now, but it's straighter on slicing and hooking drives. I'm more accurate now so what this means to me is, when I would have been hitting out of the rough by 5 to 15 yards, I'm not finding my ball a yard or two in the fairway. I think I said before, I'm a drop and stop player so I'm comfortable with generating enough spin to sit my ball within a yard of where it lands. There's something about this ball that fits my game, so far. I'm driving longer, maybe 280 for a big one and 235 or so for an average. I think I'm getting about 6 - 10 yards more and have lost nothing in the short game. So I got two boxes and will play this ball for the next several rounds. I'll be looking forward to more feedback from all ya'll.

OK, I'm done. I really like the extra distance which surprisingly follows all the way down to the wedges. I wouldn't mind having to learn new distances because I gained 10 to 20 yards throughout the set. What I can't do is deal with not holding greens. I gave it a real chance. I have a box left that I'll likely eBay away.
I took the time to observe landing points vs ending points for a dozen rounds or so. I lost strokes to the roll out. Birdie putts became challenges to make up and downs.
On top of the 10 to 20 yards I gained in the other clubs, I got at least 25 to 30 off the driver. Nice to have a shorter club into the green but it sucks if your ball won't hold.

That is why I play the Hex Blacks. The side spin is minimal, the cover is durable and it spins when I need it to.

Wanna guess what I was playing before trying the Velocity....and what I'll be playing tomorrow going forward until I find something better?????

That's right, Hex Black like a MF!!!!!!! haha got excited....had a good round in spite of it.

TRy a Titleist NXT Extreme. $24 a dozen if you can find them. If not, try the NXT Tour. Very low spin, long distance, and they stop on a dime on the greens.

I'm not so much influenced by the price as I am performance. I was hoping to get the driver distance without affecting ANYTHING else throughout the set. I don't know if they have "hot spots" or what but I got a good dozen after burners. They either completly flew the green or hit and didn't stop before rolling at a good clip off the back. I've been playing the Hex Black level of ball for so long that find it predicable and consistent. Yes, I'd like 270 & 285 jump off the driver more often, but not at the cost of a stiff wedge finishing 15 yards behind the green. Never played the NXT line. Maybe I'll try a sleeve. Don't they feel like rocks??

I was surprised at the feel of the NXT line. They are soft. The Pro V1 balls feel harder even though they say they are soft around the greens. The NXT extreme is a lower compression ball. I was hitting it consistently 275-285 with a 105 mph driver club speed. The tour may be a bit harder and I think it flies longer. I hit it average 280 and up to 300 on a good hit. They do stop right at the ball mark.

You may like the new version of the Bridgestone xFIXx, it is long, and it will hold the green.

I prefer the old version, not as long, stops reasonably fast, and is a fairway finder, the new version will curve off the map. just like the premium spin balls.

I've never heard of that model. Will you send me a link to their page?

Mmmm, I may need to try out the NXT Extreme. I wouldn't broad brush the whole NXT line the way you did though. I play both the NXT Tour and Pro V1 regularly and find the Pro V1 softer, which I like. If the NXT Extreme is softer than the Pro V1, that could be attractive.
