Pentas are not as good as ProV1s after all.

I began taking advantage of the $28/box TaylorMade Pentas during the summer and posted about them because they performed amazingly well. All of my distance control gauges fit that ball exactly like they fit the ProV1, only big difference was that the Penta doesn't rip back off full wedges like the ProV1. That actually seemed like an advantage at the time.

However, I've now played the Penta for a good five full months, and while I still really, really like it, it simply does not bite and hold as well as the ProV1. The firmer the greens, the more I prefer the ProV1.

I still like the Penta a lot and will continue to play it some of the time to save money. But I'm back to ProV1s as my tournament ball. Hopefully, Pentas remain so cheap, because they're an awfully good deal at that price (generally, three boxes for $80 + tax).

I love the Pentas because they don't spin as much as the ProV1. I tend to generate a lot of spin with my short clubs and have a lot of trouble getting the ball to stay on the green and not spinning back to me. If I am playing on soft greens then I have to play a hard two-piece ball or else I am doing a lot of chipping. On the more firm greens I like the ProV1X or Pentas. I love the pentas but I can actually get the Xs cheaper. I have heard about the 3 for 80 deal but no one around here has it so they cost me around 40 per box. The pro shop at my home course has both models of ProV1s for 36 a dozen so I am sticking with them until I can find a deal on some Pentas.

I know a lot of golfers switch out of the Pro V1 simply because the spin is hard to control sometimes. And the cover scuffed up really easy.

Penta is a strong competitor to ProV1 at any price. Personally, I dislike the arrogance the company represents, only good thing going for it is that it's made in the USA.

I hjave had great results with the Penta as well. In played about 4 months straight with them and really liked them. I will play a few different balls, depending on what kind of deals I get.

My buddy just took over a contract for recovering balls out of the lakes at both my muni courses, and he lets me hand select a dozen pro v's for $8. Hard to beat that deal.

Not a bad deal as long as they have not been in the water for more than a few months.

what can I say, I am in love with the Penta, I am able to apply nice spin even from relatively short chip shots.

The Pro-V1 had too much spin, so I switched to the Pro-V1x.

Ok, good argument going here. I went from nothing but ProV1x to ProV1's then to Srixon ZStar then to Penta after a buddy of mine had lots of good to say about the Penta.

I used the Penta for the last 6 months without fail. Superior ball off the Tee as well as into the greens and around the greens. Holds up a tad better on the surface with wedges than the ProV's and Srixon ZStar's. Great Ball But.....

Now, I was just given two sleeves of Callaway i (s) and Callaway i (z) in a Tournament I just played in. Ok, in the past I could not stand Callaway balls at all. I played in the ESPN National Doubles and was given 2 Dozen of their best 2 years ago and traded them in at the local golf shop. I recently teed up the New Callaway i (s) and have used them in several rounds now in the last few weeks. What a complete identical to the ProV1 in my opinion. A fantastic golf ball. Around the greens it is identical to the ProV1's but the hold is a tad better. I have changed for good from Penta to the Callaway i (s) and never thought that would happen for me.

The best part of it all? Callaway i (s) here in Arizona I can get for $36. The ProV1's have gone to $48. Titleist needs to come back to reality as all the top golf balls are performing at or as good as them. Sorry Titleist, I am not paying $48 for your ProV's!

Try the Callaway i (s) and or Callaway i (z). Would love to know what you Penta players think.

The Pro-V1x is much better about spin than I thought. It spins quite a bit more than the Penta but doesn't rip quite as easily as the Pro-V1.

And as much spin as I put on the ball, Pentas still slip too much to my liking on shorter shots (anything half or less).

Btw, I played a yellow Srixon Star Z or whatever it is ... the softer one ... and it's awfully intriguing. I wouldn't play a yellow ball full time, but if somebody wanted to buy me a couple boxes of white Srixons, I might take that challenge and consider using it over ProV1s. I definitely like the Srixon ball more than the B-330s or any of Callaway's tour-level rocks.

I am going to try the Penta TP3 as soon as I can get a box. They are suppose to be like the regular pentas but they are a 3 piece ball and are about 10 bucks cheaper

Sounds like a re-packaged TP Red LDP or TP Black LDP ball

It is a 3 piece tour ball. It has a urithane cover and is suppose to spin more then the 5 piece pentas. The Rocketballz ball has the same two inner layers as the TP3 but with an ionomer cover.

It's supposed to spin *more*? Really?

Let us know if they do. That's what I'm looking for for a cheaper ball.

Amazing balls hands down, I was stunned by the ball flight and control I had with the i(z) and you're right .. they're not too far off the ProV1s.

The area where ProV1's stand head and shoulders above the rest is spin from 30 yards and in. When I can make a 20 yard pitch hop once and stop DEAD, with out the ball ever reaching eye level, it takes the guess work out. Im sticking with the ProV.
