Here’s a rundown of the 10 deadliest highways in America according to their fatality crash rates, which are based on the number of fatal crashes over the last 10 years per million vehicles driven – did your daily commute make the list?
1. Florida US-1: 2.78 (1011 fatal crashes, 1079 fatalities) 2. Florida US-41: 2.16 (714 fatal crashes, 772 fatalities) 3. Florida US-27: 2.13 (529 fatal crashes, 614 fatalities) 4. Texas US-83: 1.95 (268 fatal crashes, 336 fatalities) 5. Florida US-441: 1.77 (417 fatal crashes, 442 fatalities) 6. California I-40: 1.76 (116 fatal crashes, 136 fatalities) 7. Arizona I-40: 1.65 (249 fatal crashes, 293 fatalities) 8. Texas US-87: 1.59 (166 fatal crashes, 197 fatalities) 9. Florida US-17: 1.58 (387 fatal crashes, 420 fatalities) 10. Florida US-98: 1.57 (422 fatal crashes, 465 fatalities) Why Florida? For starters, keep the one-liners to yourself about the state having so many senior drivers. Instead, sources point to distracted driving as a probable cause, but few hard stats are available since distracted driving is only a secondary offense in Florida (drivers can’t be cited by law enforcement for talking or texting while driving unless it’s in conjunction with another traffic violation). Being one of the more densely populated states in the union probably doesn’t help matters, either. Meanwhile, if you’re looking to leverage the safety statistics to your own advantage, point your ride in the direction of bucolic Rhode Island to traverse the state’s stretch of I-95, which Geotab’s study determined is the safest highway in the nation with a rate of just 0.1 fatal crashes per million vehicles on the road. Even better, slap on a set of snow tires and head north to Alaska where, ironically, the roadway that’s suffers the least number of fatalities in the country – Route 3, AKA the George Parks Highway, with fewer than four crash deaths per year – is also the most dangerous road in the state. |

The one thing all those states have in common is that they're warm weather places. Like you said, slap some snow down and everyone becomes way more careful and not as much stuff happens. I swear, rain makes people drive more idiotically than snow does for some reason.
I did some research and took this a step further by seeing what the deadliest stretches of interstate are. Here you go: 1) I-4 in Tampa 2) I-45 between Dallas and Houston 3) I-17 between Phoenix and Flagstaff 4) I-30 between Dallas and Little Rock 5) I-95 as a whole (runs from Houlton, Maine to Miami) 6) I-19 in Tucson 7) I-10 as a whole (runs from Santa Monica to Jacksonville) 8) I-37 between San Antonio and Corpus Christi 9) I-26 between Tennessee and South Carolina (I've been on this many a time and it is sketchy at parts for sure) 10) I-97 between Baltimore and Annapolis Almost all of these that have specific spots are warm weather places. The Memphis 240 Loop and 385 -> Collierville (AKA Nonconnabahn) is the most dangerous mess in our area. 55mph on 240. Crazy morons with 90s caprices running 24" rims fly at 85 - 95 MPH and only cut about 5mph off when it rains. They must have some ability because I couldn't make a vehicle that rides as high as a truck and handles twice as bad perform at 95 MPH on those roads, but the interesting modification choices indicate decision making isn't a strong suit.
I take back roads when I go to Collierville. I stay out of Memphis unless it's night time and I'm carrying (usually). |
